Cetic.br launches online version of the ICT Education 2024 book
Free publication gathers data and analyses on how schools, educators, and students adopt digital technologies in the country
In times of Artificial Intelligence, how do Brazilian students seek information? And what can be done to expand the offer of digital education in schools? These are some of the questions explored by the ICT Education 2024 book, which brings together data and analyses on how schools, educators, and students have incorporated digital technologies in management and teaching and learning activities in the country.
Launched this Tuesday (28) by the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br), the online version of the publication was presented during the 3rd Brazilian Week of Media Education, promoted by the Secretariat of Digital Policies of SECOM/PR in partnership with the Ministry of Education and UNESCO.
Besides the latest data on Internet access and digital devices in primary and secondary schools in all regions of Brazil, the book also provides analyses on trends and challenges in adopting new technologies – including generative AI –, in-depth indicators about media education and digital citizenship, exclusive articles by experts, and a detailed methodology.
For the first time, the survey investigated which information sources students use for conducting school research on the Internet. Although 74% turn to search sites, 72% mentioned video channels and apps as sources of information. Among high school students, 70% already use generative artificial intelligence tools in their research. However, only 32% say they have received guidance in schools on how to use these technologies.
Between the 2022 and 2024 editions of the survey, the proportion of primary and secondary students who reported seeking teachers to learn about the use of digital technologies increased from 44% to 56%.
“In a society mediated by algorithm-based digital technologies, digital and media education has the potential to encourage students to think critically about the impacts of these resources on society,” analyzes Daniela Costa, coordinator of the ICT Education 2024 survey.
“The ICT Education 2024 survey data highlight that expanding the offer of digital and media education in basic education schools involves overcoming significant connectivity challenges, availability of educational resources, and especially support for teachers through training programs and institutional support,” concludes the expert.
